Is College Aid actually driving up the cost of College?

College has always been expensive for the average family. However, it has only been in the last twenty years or so that the cost has started skyrocketing past the rate of inflation. Is it possible that the colleges are raising tuitions because the government is so willing to raise aid?

  1. No, colleges raise tuition to keep pace with inflation and expenses. Few colleges would break even if their only income was tuition - most colleges depend on federal, state, and private funding for the bulk of their finances. The percentage of the total budget that comes from federal and state funding has been dwindling over the years. Trust me, colleges aren't seeking to profit from your tuition, no matter who pays it.
