What are the tax implications of being married & filing seperately? How will this affect my kids college aid? I seperated with my husband in May because of his drug abuse and violence, with some cheating thrown in. Tax time is coming up. I have 2 children (20 and 22) attending full time college. They are my children, not his. Would filing married but seperately adversely affect my aticipated tax refund? How would this affect doing the FASFA's for student aid since I would need his financial info to complete them? We are not reconciling and I dont anticipate him cooperating with me on these issues. I know there are really 2 questions, but they are related
Is College Aid actually driving up the cost of College? College has always been expensive for the average family. However, it has only been in the last twenty years or so that the cost has started skyrocketing past the rate of inflation. Is it possible that the colleges are raising tuitions because the government is so willing to raise aid?

What income is poor enough for college financial aid? Hi, next year I'll be applying to Georgetown (my dream school), but i noticed that they dont give out any merit based scholarships except for sports (which dosent apply to me). However, Georgetown does offer financial aid. How poor does one have to be to qualify for financial aid? My dad is a cabinet maker and my mom is a nurse, and together they earn about $100,000 before taxes. I have a brother and a sister that also need to go to college in 2-3 years. We have no college savings, but we do have A LOT of credit card debt. I know I'm not poor, its just that we can in no way afford Georgetown! If accepted, is it likely that I will get financial aid?
How do I apply for college financial aid without a HS class rank? I graduated from a private high school, and I requested my transcript so I can apply for college financial aid (the FAFSA, scholarships, etc). And I just realized that the school doesn't provide my class rank. How do I complete financial aid applications without an official class rank, and will this lower my chances of getting financial aid? Thanks.
How does a parent divorce affect college financial aid? My parents are getting a divorce. I am going to be a freshman in college next year. I've already gotten my financial aid for this year, so that shouldn't change (right?) but I wasn't sure if this would affect my financial aid for the next years. My parent's income should stay roughly the same, albeit seperate.
for college financial aid is it better to have debt or eliminate it? I own a home and have roughly $100,000 mortgage. I also have another property but have no mortgage but I have rental income coming in. How does that affect my son's college financial aid in 2 years? Should I sell the property and pay off the mortgage and have no debt, or keep it?
What do I do for college Financial Aid if I have an International Parent? I am an Alabama resident college student. I'm having trouble filling out my FAFSA online. My mother lives in Germany; she has a US Social Security Number. My father is from the US, but he will not fill-out his income tax information for 2007. I am trying to apply for aid without being labeled as an international student. What can I do to complete my FAFSA without breaking the law?
What is the process for Financial Aid for college? How does one obtain a scholarship? What is the process and requirements? Same questions for the other forms of financial aid. If you have any information about college financial aid, I would appreciate learning what you know. Thank you!
Do you have to report college financial aid as income to unemployment? Lousy job market has forced me to go back to school for something more marketable. Have been on unemployment for several months. Soon I will start back to college and will be receiving federal financial aid for it. Do I have to report this to the unemployment office as income? I live in PA if that helps.
If my husband and I file our tax return separately, do I have a better chance for college financial aid? We are a middle income family, He works full time, I work very part time, and attend college. Even though they say our EFC is 14000 that does not mean we have it! Previous student loans, mortgage, bills etc all add up. I am never eligible for anything beyond an unsubsidized federal loan, and our credit is shaky at best, we are not eligible for a private loan. If we file "married filing separate" will I be able to receive additional financial aid?
Will I get back the money I paid for my college from financial aid? I was suspended from my college financial aid about a year ago and I've had to pay my own way since. My cousin told me that if I get my aid reinstated, I'll get back the money I paid the previous semesters and the aid itself will pay for them. That sounds strange to me, so I'm wondering if that's true or not? Thanks.
What I have in the bank will affect College Financial Aid? When I file my FAFSA, do the people check how much money I have in the bank account before approving my Federal grants/loans? What about the college financial aid office? Do they check before deciding how much money to give you? My parents say that I shouldn't have more than $500 in my bank account at any one point. But I want to open a savings account because I really need to control my splurging. Does anyone know the answer to this? Thanks!!!
Question about applying for college financial aid? I am going to be applying for aid to go back to school. I will more than likely qualify for pell grants. My question is- do they give you a little more than just the expense of the classes and books? I am a mom trying to go back to college, and I am concerned about lost wages. Any knowlege of how this works?
How does off campus housing affect college aid? I'm thinking about living off campus next year, but worried about how this will affect my aid. When doing FAFSA it asks about your housing plans. The school also determines how much aid you need...presumably by tuition, dorm charges, and other fees. If I live off campus will they factor in some money for housing when determining my aid? I'm doing this to try to save money, but if it's going to cost me aid wise it's pointless. Thanks.
What should I do about financial aid and college? I am at a loss for words. I really need some financial aid for college and I do not qualify for the FAFSA because I live in a house that has a high EFC. What should I do in this situation because I am going to college next year in the fall. Should I take out loans?? HELP!!! I am so angry by this situation but there was nothing that I could do about it! All of my friends are now running circles around me and I am so sad.

What happens to my fiance's financial aid for college after we get married? My fiance is 26 and an older college student due to serving in the Army immediately after high school. We plan on marrying next August and he will still have a year or two of school after that. Isn't it possible for a married couple to file taxes separately or together and does one option allow for a married college student to get more financial aid then the other?

What are most requirements for Financial Aid in College? Ive been trying to find out Eligibility for financial Aid but it doesnt give you circumstances. My family is not rich and not poor, but theyre mortgage is very high and im using savings bonds to pay for college. Plus I work full time. I know you can also get scholarships for nursing, and a hospital would put you through school but I cant seem to find information on that either, not even at the board sites, all they offer is partial grants. How can my wife get financial aid for college? My wife owes Okie State 3k and had to drop out of college. She wants to go back now but we don't have 3k to pay them back for the other stuff. Can we get financial aid to cover that previous 3k???
10 points: How much does financial aid affect college admission? Okay, in all honesty, how much does financial aid affect college admission into top-tier schools, such as Ivies, Georgetown, Boston College, and Northwestern. I'm hoping to apply to these schools for admission in fall of 2012. My parents are offering to pay, but I don't want to burden them too much. I know some schools are "need blind", but in actuality, how much does financial aid affect college admission.
Is there a limit placed on excess financial aid for college? Every semester students at my college (and other schools I am sure) are given excess financial aid if we were awarded more than necessary to cover tuition and other fees. I was simply wondering if they have a cut off point for how much you could possibly receive. If not, what is the most you have ever heard of someone getting or perhaps gotten yourself?
Where can a non-resident student get financial aid for college in California? My boyfriend just started college and since he was born in Mexico, unfortunately doesn't qualify for financial aid. He was approved to have his tuition reduced to the $26 per unit fee but it makes it hard to take multiple classes in one semester. If you know about ANY type of aid: scholarships, grants, etc, please let me know. By the way, he's attending Goldenwest College. Thank you.
If I stayed out a semester would I lose federal aid for college? Ok, so I have went to college for 2 years and received my Associates degree. I want to get my bachelors but have struggled over what school to attend. I think I made a bad choice in my college selection and I want to take a semester off to really think about what school to attend. Would I lose my aid? Thanks!

Does anyone know how to declare as an independent for college aid? I'm a 21 year old from Indiana who's attending school at the University of Michigan. Since I'm out of state my tuition bill is HUGE, and my parents refuse to help me pay. They wouldn't help if I had stayed in state, either. Anyway, because I'm only 21, I have to show my parents' income on my FAFSA/to my school, and it's causing me to get little aid. I've had to take out huge loans to help cover the expenses, but I'm becoming scared of taking out any more loans as I don't know if I'll be able to pay them off after graduating. Could anyone offer me any suggestions? Oh, and I've been working to help pay for school/apartment/food, etc. I haven't JUST been taking out huge loans. Oh, and my dad refuses to co-sign a loan in case he needs to take one out, and my mom is under his control and won't co-sign, either. Thanks!
Okay, additional question: Do I just get to pick which parent I want to report? I haven't lived with my parents for a year now and probably won't live with them again, so I don't technically have one or the other that I live with... My dad makes less money, am I allowed to say that I live with him for that reason?
Will I get more aid in college because my siblings will enter college? The financial aid rewards letter sent from a college stated that if I have siblings entering/leaving college my financial aid awards will change. I almost have tuition covered (about 5k) and my EFC is 0 so even if my sister enters college next year will I really get to pay less?
